Continuing Professional Development for General Practitioners

Understanding Cancer offers two courses specifically designed for professional CPD. These courses can be tailored to suit your practice requirements. The course can be run in-house at your own practice at a time to suit you. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.

Course 1

Beyond Chemo and Radiotherapy: How do the new anti-cancer drugs work?

This two hour interactive session will provide you with valuable knowledge on the mechanism of action of the next generation of anti-cancer drugs, at the cellular level. Topics covered include the aromatase inhibitors and herceptin for breast cancer treatment; the angiogenesis inhibitors, such as avastin used in advanced bowel cancer and the tyrosine kinase inhibitors used to treat chronic myelogenous leukaemia.

Course 2

Understanding Gene Chip Technology: What does it mean for patient care?

Increasingly we are hearing news reports that gene chip technology will revolutionise patient care in an new era of personalised medicine. Just what is a gene chip? How are these experiments done and what are the limitations of this new technique? All these issues and more will be addressed in a two hour interactive session that aims to equip you with the knowledge to evaluate the increasing literature surrounding gene chip technology.

How will I benefit?

Both of these courses will bring you up to speed on the latest research developments in cancer treatment. In particular they focus on the cutting edge work being done in cellular signalling pathways and the new drugs that influence these pathways. The courses will refer to the NICE guidelines, where appropriate, leaving you better able to advise your patients on these new developments.
